The most common question regarding Twitter is usually regarding how to get more followers. People always complain about how they feel that they are just talking to themselves or into a black hole and that no one is engaging with their amazing tweets. The easy to implement tips below will help you gain more followers and increase user engagement with you, your brand or your business.
1. Be Yourself!
Please do not ever auto tweet. Ever. And I mean ever. People enjoy Twitter because it gives users an avenue to engage with people and businesses that they would never be able to in general. Compose your tweets and replies in a manner that best illustrates your personality or your brands image. Sending auto tweets or generic tweets are boring and often immediately turn off people towards your account.
2. Share Useful & Engaging Content
Found an interesting article, something funny or inspiring? Share it! People love learning and statistically the fastest way to grow your audience is to share useful content.
3. Create Relationships
Don’t just tweet and dash. There is no such thing as autopilot on Twitter. The brands and people that are most successful on Twitter make a point to create and seek out relationships with their followers. Reply back to people who engage with your tweet, be there to answer questions or lead a Twitter discussion. Creating trust goes a long way in building long lasting relationships with your followers.
4. Use Twitter Search
Use the Twitter search feature to find people who have similar interests as you and Follow them. More than likely they will also follow right back. Also you can use the search to find people asking questions or having conversations about something you can help with. Look for those and reply back with helpful advice or content.
5. Don’t Over-Tweet or use Twitter like an IM
There is nothing more annoying than having your Twitter feed spammed with Tweets from one user or seeing a random conversation go back and forth between 2 users. Keep your tweets to around 20 per day and use DM for any back and forth conversations.
6. Participate in Online Discussions that use #Hashtags
Find Twitter discussions or other online events that use #hashtags. Others that are also participating in this discussion will also see you and want to engage/follow.
7. Integrate your Twitter with other Channels
Include your Twitter handle in as many places as possible. The more people that see it the more that will follow. Some examples are: your email signature, LinkedIn, Facebook, Website, Blog etc…
8. Optimize your Profile
Make sure your Twitter profile is fully filled out. Have a fun engaging picture of you rather than an icon or other image. Include a link to your most relevant website, and if you don’t have one then to another one of your Social Media profiles such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Inputting your location is also important for people searching for users or businesses in a certain area. Most importantly is your bio. Include as many keywords and interests as possible in this area because these are the words people are searching for when looking for new followers.
9. Time and Effort
All good things require you to put in the time and effort, and gaining more Twitter followers is no different. Be online at different times tweeting so that your content will reach as many different people in as many different timezones as possible. Don’t take long periods off, find the perfect balance of tweeting consistently, but not too much.
10. Twitter Golden Rule
“Retweet someone once, they will know you, retweet them a few times they will remember you.”

Good call on building ‘Relationships’ – i fully agree and yet have trouble doing this myself. probably the most likely reason I have too few followers. I’ll try to apply this advice next time I get the ‘twitter bug’ and let you know how it goes. Thanks, Saman!

Posted by samankour | June 27, 2012, 8:19 pmI was basically curious about if you ever considered replacing the design of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could include a a bit more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two photos. Maybe you could space it out better?
